DS has brought home has revision time table and one of the criteria is -

  • be able to use table facts to multiply and divide numbers up to hundreds.

Can anyone please explain what this means.

Exams in year 3 is unusual?

Not at our school unfortunately - Christmas and Summer exams from year 1 onwards.

If you know 5x6=30, you also know 50x6=300, 5x60=300, 300/5=60 etc
If you know 10x4=40, and 6x4=24 then 16x4=84

Sorry, posted too soon!

I would use it to mean if you know one fact from the times tables you can work out lots of other facts too!

MustTidyPlayroom · 05/11/2012 19:16

Thank you - I think he can do that, but I will check.

The explanation made no sense to me!

and clearly 16x4 is not 84!

I would have thought it meant to know the multiplication tables up to 10x10 and their corresponding division facts.

A level 3 APP target is to use 4x3 to solve 40x3, but I'd be surprised if a child was expected to work with 4-digit numbers by Christmas.

Juniper - I would have agreed, but there is another instruction (among many)
to know tables up to x7 and up to divide 7 - DS is working on 9x at the moment so I think we should be ok there.

He hasn't been working on 4 digit numbers as far as I know.
