When do they do the greater than or less than symbols?

Just wondering. I know they starter fewer/more right from the start, but wasn't sure about the actual symbols.

I think DS learnt to use the symbols in yr3.

DD has these (with symbols) in her HW last week. She is Y2.

Y1 here, but only in a 'choose < or > and place it between thses two groups' type way.

I did them at the beginning of term with my year 4 class and they didn't seem to recognise them...
