Are kumon type classes any good?

My son is in y2 and is apparently 'an absolute delight', has plenty of friends, very well behaved etc, but, I've noticed he seems to be struggling with the academic side of things & wondered whether a bit of outside tuition might help. Nothing too scary or taxing but some 1-2-1 time with a professional once or twice a month to try & get his writing & maths up to speed (reading is good).
Any thoughts?

Hi I did Kumons with my daughter for her maths as she was slightly below average. We started in Y2 and it didn't really made any difference to her results at school as it doesn't follow the school curriculum and I felt it confused DD.

The worksheets are very boring and the study centre we were going to was getting busier and busier so it really wasn't 1-2-1.

We have now found a lovely tutor who follows what DD is doing at school.

Ok so kumon definitely out (thanks for the link ) but maybe a tutor to support the learning he's doing at school. I guess it's something I could do myself but a combination of not having time (I'm a childminder so limited quality time in the week to sit down with him) & not really understanding the techniques they use - his letter formation & pen grip for example are poor & although he does writing practise at home, it's not teaching him the correct skills to improve (& don't even start me on maths after a disastrous weekend trying to help him grasp subtraction beyond single digits)

Actually, my DC do Kumon and I found that their mental arithmetic really improved. They are required to practice each day, against the clock ( should only take 10 mins). But I guess a tutor can provide more all rounded help. Good luck!
