Dd started Yr 1 in September and gets spellings every week. Ive always thought them a bit difficult but reckon this week takes the biscuit. What do you think ? Thought, Because, Sphinx, Phonics, Read, Stay.

Is it a joke?

SoundsWrite · 18/10/2012 17:59

They're easy, Gold. In fact, they're all spelt the same way b-o-n-k-er-z!

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 18:07

So are they not yr 1 level then ? Should I say something? Have already had run -in over reading levels Smile. Dont want a bad reputation !

Are you sure he hasn't picked up a letter to parents inviting them to STAY at drop-off to hear how PHONICS is taught, and how it links to how their child learns to READ, BECAUSE the latest THOUGHT is that children do better at school with parental involvement? I SPHINX that might be it?

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 18:10

Que ?!

Those can't be right! I'm a secondary teacher and have Year 8s who would struggle with some of those.

LeeCoakley · 18/10/2012 18:22

The only thing I can think of that links them is Letters and Sounds Phase 5 digraphs that would be taught in phonics. Although maybe 'ough' is Phase 6. But they wouldn't all be taught in the same week.

mrz · 18/10/2012 18:23

The spellings aren't difficult for Y1 but they are totally random and completely pointless

mrz · 18/10/2012 18:25

no "ough" is phase 5 - Y1

AvonCallingBarksdale · 18/10/2012 18:27

They're a bit weird, cos they don't focus on particular sounds. eg DD (yr1) has "cloud, about, treat, seat, crayon, spray", so they follow sounds for that week IYSWIM

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 18:29

Mrz, this was my thought too.

Are these words tailored to her? Could they be words she's struggled to say when reading in the last week?

Narked · 18/10/2012 18:34

Could sphinx be an autocorrect??

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 18:49

These are class spellings, not just for Dd. Last week was dolphin and elephant so would guess they're learning ph but sphinx? The whole class came out with these in their spelling books so not autocorrect.

What's wrong with sphinx? I use that word in my phonics group. Or am I missing something? Grin

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 19:00

What about paraphernalia ? Thats a nice easy decodable ph word Smile

OP posts:
mrz · 18/10/2012 19:01

I would have gone with graph and phone

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 19:03

So the sounds are right but the words are random then ? Will have to see how DD goes.

I've now realised I say Sphinx in a weird way.

mrz · 18/10/2012 19:12

no the sounds aren't right either ... they are mixed up ...completely random spellings pointless! pointless!

RowgtfcGOLD72 · 18/10/2012 19:17

Thanks everyone.
