Ok so the class have been being given weekly reading targets. Up until now they have been fairly self explanatory.

But now I must be thicker than I thought cos the latest has me all confused.

So oh wise mumsnetters can someone tell me what - picking out important words-is meant to mean.

Bare in mind this is yr one and every other word is the is him kipper etc

if its oxfor reading tree-ort theres usually key words on back inner page. cant think what else they mean.

There's some examples of decodable words at the back of one but there's loads of them. Too many for them

I think they probably mean words that if they were absent would either mean there was no story other then connective words and names and words that change the story in absence or give emphasis to a certain part of the story or carrictors emotions.
I know early ORT books are a bit (!) short on that type of thing but if it were me I would be talking to my FCC about words that would make everything different if the word wasn't there or was changed.

That's very helpful guys thank u. They just seem very young to be doing this kind of thing when there's barely a story in the book as it is without trying to do this kind of stuff. :)

Ok more bloody tears :( anyone know if she will get into trouble at school if I document her being so upset in her reading record?

Why is she upset?

If u look in education u will see several threads started by me about the bloody ORT books.

Every time I think I've got through to her about having to read them, she spends another evening in tears at having too :(

Can I please have some suggestions for an alternative reading scheme that I could use at home and hope to god I can convince teacher to accept them for my dd

Apologies if you've covered this in your other threads but go into school and talk with her teacher. no, they probably won't agree to her having a different reading scheme to everyone else but they certainly should be able to make targets more tangeable and they need to know the effect this work is having on your DD.

I've tried :( several times in reception and once in yr one. They still keep giving her the damn things. I can't get anythin done at home it takes forever to get her to do them and if she's even a little bit tired it ends in tears :( she's going backwards on them now she's just not even trying. Started this thread to find out what was meant by the reading target, found that out thanks to u guys but when I sat down to do it she ended up
In tears again. I wrote in the diary last night that dd was hugely upset over doing the books and didn't actually finish reading them but doubt that's gonna change anythin either :(

To be honest, if schoolbooks were making my daughter weep they'd be out of the house into the road and then I'd go out there in my carpet slippers and stamp on them. The school could hang for all I care.

I'm just so tired :( I spend all weekend and holidays reading books she's picked getting her confidence up and enjoying books. We have a lovely time and them all the hard work is undone at the sight of B&C again.

She can still remember what happened in books she read weeks ago but can't even remember what the page before was about. I don't understand how she can successfully read rudyard kiplings book-dumpling struggling on four words throughout entire book, and then "forget" a simple word like secret or pirates that's she's known for months. Seriously think it shows how little interest she has in thinking about what she's doing in these books and she's no where near doing her best with them :(

Write in the reading record that it wasn't clear what you were expected to do.
Then write what you did instead, discussed meanings of words or as was said above how much the story would change if a word was changed.

You have not avoided the homework just interpreted it differently

Thank you nevermind I ended up last night writing that we attempted to do as requested but dd became tearful at being made to do the book, so we will continue to work on the target set using books of dd's choice.as I wasn't going to force her to read anymore of the book she was set. Now I'm
