radicalsubstitution: I have no doubt most parents work very hard for their money. I just question why anyone would spend hundreds of pounds to buy toys. Suduko and maths puzzles can be done with paper and pencil -- they don't require a tablet, unless the user is captivated by electronic gimmicks rather than the puzzles themselves.
I agree that most things are ok in moderation (but not that "everything" should be done in moderation as some things shouldn't be done at all!). We have a desktop computer at home and my son can play games on it. The computer is in a room just by the kitchen so anyone who uses it parents or child are simultaneously involved with the family, rather than engaged alone with a tablet. I think this gives him sufficient exposure to "games" and he doesn't crave any more. He doesn't need to play on a tablet in a car or when friends visit because there are all sorts of other games they can play they even talk with each other! And... there is no shortage of friends who wish to come to our house (and ride in our car) despite the absence of electronic games.
OPs question was which tablet to buy: my suggestion is to open a savings account for her daughter instead.
