Is this effective discipline technique in the classroom?

DS yr4-5 class is almost always very last class to come out at 3pm, well more like 3:12 today. DS says it's because many children (him included) won't stop talking & listen to final instructions of the day, & the teacher won't let them go until they quiet down.

If delayed release works (eventually) to get them to behave, then fine, but I have a bad feeling that the whole year is going to go like this, with DS class always last out for same reason.

Do you reckon I'm stuck with having to wait all year or is there any cause for hope they might start coming out sooner?

I think maybe I would have another cup of tea and leave the house 5 minutes later

The teacher is right to not let them go until they have listened to her/his instructions. Only MHO of course and I may not be popular.

I'm not in the room so I am not too sure why teacher needs them quiet, I assume for a good reason, if only to stop them from being horrendously noisy in the corridor if nowt else. It just suddenly struck me, am I going to be cooling heels out there all year?

I have 2 other DC to meet who sometimes come out with first wave of escapes, so can't really indulge in extra cuppa, sadly! I guess I should use the opportunity to chat more with other DC more individually.

I am normally against punishing the whole class when it probably isnt all of them but it is important that they hear final instructions in case they need to remember something for the next day etc. By yr 4/5 they will not get letters for everything and will be expected to take responsibility for certain things.

It is also good training for secondary when they will probably be receiving whole class punishments and they will have to be much more independent.

It is all about behaviour and expectations. The children know they are expected to be quiet and listening, if they don't do this the follow up is to wait. I generally do the same as Euphemia really shows which children listen to and follow instructions!
