Parents helping in their own childs class

I'm interested to know how common this is and if it happens in your dc's school?

I used to volunteer in my child's class but this September I have actually asked to stay put instead of following the dc's into their new classes. It takes me a while to feel confident in a class and to get to know how to best assist a particular teacher/TA combo so I think from now on I will follow the staff around if they let me
