Good schools in SE London??

Hi
I'm new to mumsnet and wanted to ask you ladies for some help.
My husband and I are looking for a bigger house in Brockley but wanted some information about which are the best schools. I have found the school reports a bit confusing as most say they are a 2 which is a good but are these schools really any good? Haberdashers seems to be the school to try and get into but I have heard the catchment area is very small. Does anyone have children that go to John Stainer or Hollydale or any of the other schools in the area that they are happy with?
We could also move towards New Cross or further down the East London line to Sydenham and would move for a good school. I would like to send my son to a school where children have to wear a uniform and would consider a C of E school but not Roman Catholic.
Do children take the 11 plus in SE London? Any idea about secondary schools in the area.
Thanks very much x

Out of the SE boroughs I would say the Beey borough has the best schools.

My friend works as a teacher at Habadashers... V hard to get into, small catchment area.

Sorry can't be more help - bumping in the hope someone else knows more than me!

That should read Bexley borough... Stupid iPhone!

How far along are you willing to look? I am in Gipsy Hill, and we've got a few good schools around here.

There are grammar schools in Kent. But not in London as far as I know. If you're looking at state schools that is. If you're looking at private schools then the area around here, including West Dulwich/Dulwich Village, is awash with good ones.

Hi
Thanks for the advice, I need to stay on the east london line for work so Bexley or Gipsy Hill are a bit far away but will keep researching : )

Bexley have great primaries, across south of borough is more prosperous think Sidcup, Bexley, Blendon, Danson Welling borders. Parts of bexlehyeath and barnehurst.
Bexley have 4 grammars which take approx 20% top ability.

Bromley borough also have excellent sought after primaries, Shortlands area, Beckenham. And good secondaries. They have 2 grammars butter are higher selective so approx 5% ability.

Lots of

Sorry. Lots of Bexley trains run through New cross so you could pick up E London line.

shattereddreams · 17/09/2012 22:09

And blame iPhone for typos.

Dd goes to herne hill prep and loves it. Maybe worth considering?

Brockley/Nunhead area has lots of good primaries. Hollydale and John Stainer are both very good. Also Edmund Waller, Ivydale, John Donne. Further into Brockley Myatt Garden, Stillness, Meadowgate and Turnham all have good things said about them.

Haberdashers is sort of untested at primary level as they are just opening the first year of the primary phase at Pepys Road this year (I think). The big draw is that pupils will be guaranteed entry to the secondary school. I can't pretend that's not a very tempting prospect as it's a v v v oversubscribed and successful school in an area with rather a dearth of secondaries.

SminkoPinko · 17/09/2012 22:50

Though there are some pretty good secondaries accessible from Brockley, really. I know people with kids at Addey and Stanhope, Deptford Green, Kingsdale, Harris (boys, girls and academy), Walworth, Sydenham Girls, Prendergast as well as Haberdashers. Most people are quite pleased, afaik.

Further down in SE23 you have Fairlawn (massively popular and hard to get into) Dalmain, where my dd goes and which is excellent. Kilmorie, which friends of mine really like and which has just had a sparkly new Ofsted. Horniman, which is popular. Also Beecroft primary has just been redone out in Brockley - new head is apparently from Myatt Gardens and the new building looks fab. Nearer Sydenham Eliot Bank is popular.
