DD1 starts Reception on Monday

My DD1 starts Reception on Monday (Part time afternoons for 2 weeks then full time). Feeling really nervous about it especially as she has special needs and has a statement for speech problems and fine motor delay.

Any tips for making it easier? What does she need to take with her on Day 1?

Thanks
Michelle

Wine! For you that is ;)
Can you speak to the class teacher before hand and make a list?

My DD started last week and had to take:

  • water bottle to be left at school
  • wellies - ditto
  • PE kit - ditto
  • rain coat with hood
  • lunch bag
  • book bag - empty to start with
Don't forget to label, label, label! Good luck to your DD, I'm sure she will love it.

we are supposed to have all the things lucky mentioned but as they are still doing their induction no-one has pe kits and wellies yet. Took book bag to get into the habit (and she insisted, wouldn't leave it at home) and drink bottle, but they have cups in class too.

we don't have lunch yet and it was warm and sunny last week so no coat.

Just saying all that because actually on day one, as long as you have her, the rest can probably trickle in over the week.

Has school be good about her needs? Are they all set up for her? Schools are usually pretty good about settling their sn kids in, and reception is usually fun.

She might even surprise you and love it!

Thanks for the replies. I think I am planning to take book bag with bottle of water and her transition book from nursery and her PE kit (hopefully I can just stick this on her peg as don't suppose she will need it yet).

School seem fine so far and speech therapist is visiting her on second week and then she has fortnightly speech therapy thereafter, which is more than she has ever had before. She was having 3 monthly visits at nursery but now we have statement it is documented in there to have fortnightly visits.
