What to do? Y1 reading book.

DD (Y1) has just brought home her first reading book of the year. She's on ?purple band I think (was turquoise last term, at any rate). Her current home reader is ORT level 1c. We're meant to spend 10 minutes a night reading this, until Monday when it will be changed.

Do you think it's a mistake and should I mentioned it to her teacher tomorrow? It took her precisely 45 seconds to read the whole thing, including the "Ask your child" comprehension question on the back cover. Even for a gentle intro to Y1/new class etc, that's a bit daft surely?

We change reading books everyday here if the children have read them! Go in and talk to them. Maybe your dd needs a new level.

ort 1c books are purple... but not purple band so someone has buggered up...

Sounds like they have just mixed up the lilac and purple bands.

Thanks - I don't pick her up on Fridays so I ended up putting a note in her home/school book. She has been given a new book today, no idea whether it's the right level as it's not marked but there's more to it than yesterdays!

My DD gets just one book a week (although she was sent home with two this week). I top her up with books from the library during the week or otherwise it gets a bit boring for her.

Hmm doesn't sound right. DD came home with 2 purple band books today and they are lengthy and fairly challenging (for her anyway!). Purple band is equivalent to ORT level 8 so does sound like there has been a mix up.

RueDeWakening · 15/09/2012 00:20

Well I am all confused now, tonight's book was meant to be either Gold or White band (not sure which, had two stickers on it, neither of which was purple!) which I guess means they've moved her up again? Except the actual content seemed fairly easy and more like the Orange level stuff she read for a lot of last year.

I have no clue what's going on, I shall just have to wait till parent's evening next month and speak to her teachers then.

Fortunately we have lots of books at home and go to the library most weeks, but she gets in trouble if she doesn't read her school book every night - or more likely, she reads it and I forget to write it in her book...

Just read them and put a note in saying what you have here. i.e. "We read this and it was fairly easy for her. Can you please clarify what band she is currently reading?"
