What would be an ideal first day back?

If you could dictate how the day went, what would you want to happen with your DC?

What sort of activities would you think were useful, and what would you see as a waste of time?

I would want the day to be as typical of a normal day as it will be the rest of the year. I think the sooner kids settle into the routine of a new class the better.

Hi juniper904:

Our school tends to use the first days to decorate their classrooms with student artworks, get to know each other, vote students to various roles in school/ class and decide the class rules and learning goals.

I really like that the children discuss what they'd like to learn that year with the teachers. I can't swear that the agreed list is always faithfully adhered to - but I do know that most teachers try really hard to incorporate as much as they can.

Last year DD1's class were wild about Dr. Who and they did the BBC Script to Screen competition which was a great creative writing unit and on a topic they all felt interested in. They didn't win - but a lot of the kids all said that was the best bit of last school year.
