Child about to go back to school to year one seems to have forgotten everything he learnt in reception?! Struggling to read even easy words.
Is this usual?

Nope...not unusual. We found that we had to keep up with reading over the holidays (and I mean every day) or our DD seems to go backwards. Other parents have said similar to us so I don't think it's unusual. They do pick it back up after a few weeks at school tho'.

When a child is young and learning to read they really need to get some practice in every day.

I made the mistake of letting DS have a total break from reception to yr1 in everything and it took him the same to recover ie 6 weeks.

He is now going into yr3 and I have learnt my lesson and he has been reading pretty much every day in the holidays ever since.

DD is going into reception in sept and is a pretty good reader and has not done any reading really for 2 weeks and I have noticed a dip so will keep practising (we were away for 2 weeks).
