Primary Schools in Shropshire

Moving back to England after 10 years away and feeling v overwhelmed...

Most likely area at the moment is Shropshire and somewhere between Newport and Telford - DH most likely to be working around West Midlands.

Can anyone give any input re the primary schools in this area - I left England before having children and I'm really going to have to do tons of research re what are Key Stages, Ofted, SATs, even the names of the classes!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice/reassurance whatsoever

Hi

I live fairly near Newport - well in a village but it comes under Staffordshire not Shropshire. i have just moved my DD to a school in Newport. It is St peter and St Paul's Catholic primary. We are not Catholic but luckily they are growning so there is room for her in Yr 3 come Sept. It has a very good reputation and the Ofsted is all good (for now anyway). If you can handle the Catholic stuff this is a good bet. Apart from that i think the Newport C of E junior is pretty good and Muxton (which is between Newport and Telford) is brilliant - might be good for where you are looking at living. Hope that helps. Look at the websites and Ofsteds for these schools. All have good SATS results too. Another plus for Newport is the local girls grammar - if you have girls. It is non fee paying and supposed to be outstanding in most things according to Ofsted and local discussion anyway. They do have to sit the 11 plus though.

My niece goes to the girl's grammar there, they live 15 mins from Newport. My nephew is just about to start the boy's grammar in Newport too and I would love my three DSs to go there. I've heard that they are both excellent. We live in Shrewsbury at the moment so I don't know much about primary schools around Newport / Telford although my niece and nephew went to Hinstock Primary, which they both loved as far as I could tell, if that helps.

I live in Newport. My DD is just about to leave Newport Infant School (as she will be Yr 3 after Sept). She has been there since she joined in Reception and has thrived. The school is fantastic and is Ofsted rated as Outstanding.

We chose to send her to Moorfield Primary (again rated Outstanding) in preference to Newport Junior School as we felt that was a better fit for her - but a lot of parents are happy with the Junior school.

The other options we looked at were Edgmond Primary School and also the one in Gnosall (which is just in Staffordshire)

Thanks so much for all your advice. I could have sworn I'd been back to this thread but I can't see my response - sorry for not thanking you before!

I think DH may be working around Walsall - I can see from google maps the distance it is from Newport in miles but I'm just wondering does anyone have any idea what this commute is like (by car)? I googled but just came up with scary statistics about the M6 there being the busiest stretch of motorway in the country!!!!!
