I just wanted to make sure I'm doing everything I can for my 9 yr old. He's currently working at 2a in writing (2b in yr3, 2b in yr2). He's a 3a in reading and 4c in maths.

His spelling is very poor, we're going to be working our way through apples and pears over the summer. And since half term (after the sats tests) he's been having private tuition with a teaching assistant at the school where they've been working hard on descriptive work.

I'm also encouraging him to read more, although he's not a fan of reading!

I was just wondering if I'm missing something glaringly obvious, His teachers seem to be doing a good job (with the others!) and it's an outstanding junior school, so I'm not really concerned about that.

He also dislikes writing (with me, he loves doing it with his tutor!) so although I'll try diary ideas etc over the holidays, I think 10 mis apples &pears a day might be his limit

I wonder if we can start a support thread for folk who are going to "make" their kids do writing over the summer. Yours isn't the first OP with same problem.

DS is "on target" but he's been known to throw almighty tantrums at any writing exercise, so I feel I need to make him do daily writing in the hols to boost his confidence. Ten minutes/day would be okay except that I know DS will try to stretch it to an hour. Hmm Others have talked about shopping lists & pen pals; I had a gut feeling none of that right for DS. Will go find a thread...

I think I might see if his tutor can fit him in for a couple of sessions over the holidays to keep him going!
