Reading book this weekend is 'The Magic Key'. I felt a sinking feeling as I pulled it out of the bag thanks to comments on here. Now we have read it I want to slash my wrists.

Give me the worst - how long does the 'story' continue? And does it get any better?

Forever and no it doesn't!

Don't forget to look for the pair of specs hidden in each book...

The Magic key is book one at level 5.
They continue to level 9 with hundreds of exciting stories which all have a safe and happy ending so as not to traumatise the tender.
Beats bloody Ginn though, and the Village with Three Corners.

And Wellington Square.

It was a sad day when they disarmed the WWII bomb instead of letting it destroy that cursed place.

Itsjustafleshwound · 06/07/2012 20:16

They are a bit like an elastoplast - not bad when you are at the right side of it ... but the ORT series doesn't improve ...

shattereddreams · 06/07/2012 21:30

Damn key. Read The Bully tonight with Dd (who howled with laughter). The key glows red in this story, thoroughly delighting her.
Precisely one hour later, I'm on 2nd large Wine

SunflowersSmile · 06/07/2012 21:33

My ds love, love, loved them!!

tedmundo · 06/07/2012 21:36

We are reading about Saving Floppy from some giant bird at the minute. Ds loves a magic key story, bless his simple little cotton socks.

BombasticAghast · 06/07/2012 21:38

Nooooo not safe and fluffy stories.
My (nearly) 3 year old DTs are totally traumatised b the Hairy Scary Monster bastard magic key

Leeds2 · 06/07/2012 21:39

I used to love the Magic Key books. DD is 14 now ........

ByTheWay1 · 06/07/2012 21:39

One of the early ones has Floppy peeing up a tree....

SkipTheLightFanjango · 06/07/2012 21:40

Been through ORT 3 times so far..and now starting again with dc4. Argghh bloomin floppy, chip, kipper et al. They will haunt me forever!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 06/07/2012 21:42

They really are better than the early Ginn books, though. Even if they aren't very phonic.

Odmedod · 06/07/2012 21:51

I too love Magic Key books! Blush

Bunnyjo · 06/07/2012 21:51

DD (YrR) brought home The Bully a little while back. I found it a good opportunity to explain about bullies and DD enjoyed reading about the magic key turning red and making the bully into a motormouth etc. That said, I'd quite happily burn most of the Biff, Chip et al books - DD frequently reads them really quickly and compains they're too boring/easy, despite being turquoise level now. The teacher has sent her home with other books more recently and her interest in reading has quickly returned.

SunflowersSmile · 06/07/2012 21:52

Oh but the pictures are fascinating...

OddBoots · 06/07/2012 21:55

I think those books are designed to motivate parents to work with their children at home to hurriedly rush them through that stage of reading.

bumpybecky · 06/07/2012 22:15

I've read those books with all 3 dds, never spotted the glasses though! just as well ds starts school in september.....

EcoLady · 06/07/2012 22:38

You also need to spot a bone, a running dog and the dodgy-looking bloke with red beard and manic grin.

NoComet · 06/07/2012 23:37

The magic key are fine it's just every other school reading book that is shit.

Dyslexic DD1 liked the magic key, could cope better with them than anything else because there wasn't pages of scene setting, descriptions and new characters names to struggle through.

DiscoDaisy · 06/07/2012 23:41

I didn't mind the magic key books on their own but I have 4 of my DC between yr7 and yr2. By the time I got to DC5 I could read the bloody books blindfolded!
I love the TV series though and we have a magic key dvd somewhere in our house.
