Teaching opportunity in future - how can I prepare?

Due to inside knowledge (dd1 attends the school) a year 4 teacher will be going on maternity leave in December. I qualified as a teacher a year ago and would give anything to work at this school assuming that they advertise the job. What I really need are ideas about how to prepare - not just for a potential interview but also to demonstrate my ability. Any tips gratefully received.

I have found through experience that successful candidates are often those who are known to the school. Can you do any voluntary work in the school? This way they can see how you are with the children and how you might fit in with staff. Also take every opportunity to tell anyone that works there that you are keen to work in a local school and would be available to start in the new year.
Good luck :)
