The Summer Holiday reading Challenge in libraries

Has this been the victim of the budget cuts?

Last year we saw loads of posters and the local library visited the school to advertise it to the kids but this year we've heard nothing.

We were wondering what this year's theme would be and would be gutted if it was scrapped.

It's perhaps too early for publicity to be up?

It is still running, see here: summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

Thanks.
The kids will be pleased that it's still going to be run.

I'm surprised that there's a movie and website for it.

My oldest is in Y6 so I guess that this is the last year that he'll be doing it.

I checked with my library and they said it will be an Olympic theme (London borough).

As it is still 4 weeks until the holidays I expect the poster etc in the next 2 weeks or so.

Thanks noramum.

I'm such a geek to be thinking about the reading challenge. Blush Not a tiger mum, honest!

Our library is currently advertising for unpaid slaves willing volunteers to register children and do the admin for the reading challenge. So it's definitely happening here.

Am now just hoping that they find some teenagers that can summon up the enthusiasm to make eye contact and say "well done" when they meet a small child who has successfully completed the challenge unlike last year's miserable bunch who made it seem like a total non-event.

Crazygracieuk: I asked roughly 4 weeks ago. My DD likes books, loves when we read to her, can read her schoolbooks fairly fluently but won't touch any of her own books or the library books "just to read".

So a challenge may be what she needs.

We had info home from school about our borough's reading challenge last weekso went in this weekend to register and it isn't starting "til July" said the helpful man. He was unable to be more informative. So we'llpopback next week sometime I think Smile

It doesn't really challenge those who are already readers though- I know mine were very puzzled by it when they were younger as they couldn't understand why you were only being asked to read 6 books across the whole holiday. You can borrow 8 books per child here, and change them as often as you like. It could do with having some more 'levels' to it, I think. Smile

AChickenCalledKorma · 26/06/2012 15:45

BackForGood - I know what you mean. Not sure how they would do it, though, since reading ability is so variable by age.

I have been known to insist that DD1 includes at least one book that is genuinely a challenge for her. (Like, at least two inches thick!!!) She wasn't too impressed when her friends got their names up on the board within five minutes of registering, though!

We're in Edinburgh, but our library is currently registering children. I know as when we were last in my son spotted the leaflet and insisted on signing up right there and then and he has already read 3 books. Children can borrow 12 books at a time here and I agree, 6 doesn't seem too many to read over the whole summer. We also have an Olympic theme.

florenceuk · 26/06/2012 16:22

for ours you can only do two books at a time - so at least three visits

ByTheWay1 · 26/06/2012 16:33

Ours is the same florenceuk three trips to the library - and 6 books is a LOT when you are talking 300/400 page books for 10/11 year olds with a social life, and piano lessons, and karate lessons, and a holiday, and......... 6 weeks flies by WAY too quickly for us to fit in everything...

Last year of challenge for my eldest.....
