Sorry - reading levels again.

DS is coming to the end of Year 1. He was on Rigby Star Independent Readers White Level. On Friday he brought home a Collins Big Cat White Level.

The blurb for Big Cat is that they're for 'high interest, low ability' readers - but are aimed for Year 3. Do you think he's been given the wrong book? We were expecting him to go onto Rigby Lime (next level to white).

He's not really having any problems with it (reading 'extinguisher' etc with no problems). Any teachers out there with any ideas? It was all Peter & Jane in my day!

I presume he's not ready to go up a level so they've found some more white books for him to read.

Low ability Y3 is obviously high ability Y1.

Thank you. Going to see teacher tomorrow just in case it's a wee error - a white level Big Cat been put in Rigby box by mistake. The Big Cat book certainly has bigger words than Lime Rigby .

Sounds like sensible extension work before moving him on to me. I like the Big Cat books, they are soooo much better than the Biff and Kipper stuff that my DDs had to live with.

DS in Y1 was having books from the Y3 collection just before he moved off colour bands, TA was trying to find books that would interest him and were right level. He had read all the Y1 and Y2 books about sport, bikes and farms and was clearly not engaged by some of the books he was being given from the Y1 collection ( biff n chip et al) .

Thanks all. Thankfully missed biff & the gang. But Rigby obsessed with sodding pirates & castles. Not long to end of year. We'll go with the flow till Year 2 I think.
