What sort of homework do your DCs get (primary)?

DD in Y3 gets weekly spelling and then has tasks to research certain topics and 'present your findings creatively'. Just wondered if this was the norm?

DS also in Y3 has

  • to read aloud to an adult at least 3 times a week
  • spelling words (linked to spelling pattern taught in class)
  • practising times tables (he is expected to improve his recall week on week)
  • one piece of homework, a week, linked to work on class, which probably takes about 20 minutes. It's generally worksheet based. I hate project type homework lol!

I also loathe project type homework as it is so vague and usually involves lots of parental help. Also not sure DD actually learns anything much. DD also reads every night but when I asked her teacher about times tables she said that they don't learn them by rote anymore?? I have started to do these with DD myself as I can't see how else there is to move on in maths without this.

DS yr3
weekly spellings
2 reading books
either numeracy worksheet or research type as OP. DS is not creative so he usually finds a few words and a picture on the internet, prints off and sticks in homework book - teacher seems to find acceptable.
