My daughter is in yr 5 and has just done really well in her end of year tests so her school want her to sit this years yr6 sats this week and if she scores just as high in them they want her to sit the level 6 maths paper with the 3 children from yr6 who they have entered to see how she gets on. she cant sit the level 6 english as they have not entered any yr6 for it so wont be getting any level 6 english papers
i dont mind her sitting them as she quite enjoys them and her teacher spoke to her about it all and she is quite excited about it
i only found out about this on friday so dont know what day this level 6 paper is
also do you think i should show her a past level 6 paper so she at least knows what to expect as i know they will be alot harder than yr 6 normal sats

reading is Monday

I think writing can be done at any point

Bati · 20/05/2012 08:09

she is not doing the reading one as the school have not entered any of their yr6 for it so they wont be getting those papers
Its a good thing really as she has to sit the yr6 sats first before she sits the level 6 maths

2 papers apparently. DS2 is sitting them so I asked!

A non-calculator paper and a calculator one.

Bati · 20/05/2012 08:18

with her being in yr5 do you think her school will mark them or they will be sent off with the yr6 ones - just wondering if she will find out if she got level 6 striaght away or if she will have to wait till official yr6 sats results day

They would be foolish to send them off to be marked officially as a child can only enter the tests and have them counted once, so if they were included this year, they couldn't be included next! As it is the year 6 results the school is monitored on, it would be better to enter her next year!

i think i will speak to them in the morning about it as although she is very clever she has not been taught any high school stuff so doubt she will get a level 6 this year and would hate her not to be able to do it next yr when she would most probably fly through it
She is new to this school and one of the reasons we moved her was because her old school didnt do anything for her and she was very bored there. I think her new school were a bit surprised this week with her results when she sat the end of yr tests and this is why they are getting her to do the yr6 sats and if her grades are just as high the level 6 papers. They told me they had never had a child do so well and they are going to change the curriculum for her next yr and they have told her its just a bit of fun to see what she can do. so maybe its just away to further access her and not send them off. However in the back of my mind i keep thinking then why get her to do this yr6 normal sats and not just give her the level 6 straight away as the most you can get is a level 5a on the normal one

Hmm, it's a bit odd she is doing both. You can only officially obtain a test level 6 if you also achieve a test level 5, but that would only matter if the results were going to become official end of KS2 results. The only possibility is that this year's Year 6 cohort are a weak one and your daughters results might make a difference to the overall school percentages whereas next year the cohort is better and they won't need your daughters results!

However, it could be that the year 6 paper is just to reassure themselves that she IS as good as they think she is ( the year 5 paper technically goes up to a 5B rather than a 5A if I recall correctly!) so they might want evidence that she is actually a 5a rather than a 5b. But this is really just nit-picking!

thats my thought why does she need to do this yrs official sats papers before the level 6 sat paper if it is to just see if she level 6 and its not official. If they are planning to send them off officially where will that leave her next yr if she cant sit the sats because she has done them this yr

Presumably they think she is already at a level 5a (DS2 was in Y5) but they want to see this and then see where she scores in the L6 papers as well. As she's not been coached, it should show her natural ability.

Bati · 20/05/2012 16:17

Definitely not been coached, we knew nothing about it until she finished school on Friday. I don't think she will get the level 6 as she has never been shown some of the maths that will be in it, I think if she had covered the curriculum for level 6 then she would, I suppose its gonna be a bit like sitting a French exam without every studying french

just an update spoke to my dd teacher today when i picked her up - they are not sending the tests off its purly to see how much she actually knows. Today she did all of the maths yr6 sats from last week and they marked them and she only got 1 question wrong Grin
so she will be sitting the level 6 papers tomorrow morning i think Smile
