Dictation homework in Scotland.

Is it normal for all p1s to get this? DS has a friend who has been doing dictation homework for a long time, DS hasn't had any home. He seems to be doing fine at everything, we are not pushy, nor bothered about him maybe being "behind" as they all catch up eventually and he is the youngest in his class.

I just wondered if it was a normal part of the homework cirriculum?

All schools will be different with the homework they give. Don't feel your child is missing out - I've never given dictation homework to p1s. :)

It is some time since DS was in P1 but can confirm that he never had dictation homework in P1 or at any time throughout primary or secondary. In P1 there was just reading homework. Is the parent supposed to read out the dictation and the child write what the parent says? Seems an odd sort of homework and quite demanding for P1.

TheCunningStunt · 18/05/2012 16:40

Yep you read out a list of words and they write them down. DS does a lot of reading, and he does write things out quite a lot of his own accord. Not worried at all about his progress. I just wondered if it was part of the homework cirriculum. But I suppose it is different council to council. Thanks for input this far Smile

dd only just started getting these - think we have had four lists of 3 letter words since the start of this term

Ds3 is in P1 and doesn't get this. He just gets nightly reading, words to learn, spellings and the odd homework challenge ie. practice counting to 20 in 2's.
