My dd struggled with her reading and at the beginning of y2 could read the word did. Now she is on green books and on track for a 2c. Anyone know what this means?

green books are roughly a NC level 1b which means she needs to make 2 sub levels progress in the next month to reach 2C ... (children are expected to make 3 sub levels in a year in Y2)

The national expectations for most children by the end of Y2 is a 2B

It sounds as if she has made good progress this year well done to your daughter rose.

If she gets a 2c at the end of Y2 (ie in 4 weeks time) then she is fine.

However if green band books are the correct level for her she is not a 2c.

Do you mean green band? What actual books is she reading? And are they easy or does she struggle with them?

School always told me DD was on track to make a 2c. I knew she wasn't. But they kept on insisting she was.

And she didn't. In her SATs they only gave her a 1. (although an EP report done at the same time put her below a 1)

I thought they were inflating her level. It never occurred to me they were just plain lying to me to stop me harassing them, but actually knew she wasn't a level 2. They insisted and insisted and insisted she was going to be a 2c.

They also sent home green books which she couldn't read. And insisted she could read them Confused

Is your school an infant school or a primary school?

ORT turquoise band books are green though. And that is 2c, isn't it?

IndigoBell · 07/05/2012 20:50

Ah yes, ORT stage 7 are an olive green colour and are turquoise band and are approx 2c.

Hopefully that's what the OP meant when she said green books :)

Confused at the olive green = turquoise thing. Is it any wonder people don't understand reading levels???

IndigoBell · 07/05/2012 21:06

All reading schemes come in different colours and levels.

After ort was published the govt tried to standardise reading levels with coloured book bands. ORT and the others didn't change the colour of their books in line with this.

Most schools put a coloured sticker on the book to say what book band it is.

Newer ORT books have a coloured dot next to the stage no. to tell you.

is there a list for all this somewhere online that someone knows about? I have tried googling but just got very very confused.

The two most helpful webpages I have found to help with this are:

www.readingchest.co.uk/book-bands

www.oup.com/oxed/pdf/ORTReadingAges.pdf

Thank you so much for your advise. She sometimes gets orange books too the green is a dark green. Some of them seem very easy and some she struggles with. Doesn't seem to be consistent. Your right she has come a long way in a year. Just worry as you do

I would check out the oxford owl website as its got loads of free e books that your child can read online to help with their reading.

Orange is 1 level below turquoise and 2 levels above blue, so sounds like she's on turquoise, or it's a big jump! Does it give you a numbered level as well? Blue is stage 4, green is stage 5, orange is 6 and turquoise is 7. Reading at turquoise level, she could scrape a 2c but not if she's reading at blue level.

olibeansmummy · 11/05/2012 23:53

Oh sorry, I see you said green not blue ( well turquoise is bluey green!) in that case she could be green or turquoise lol. Green is still not 2c though, I'd ask her teacher what she's on specifically.

IndigoBell · 12/05/2012 09:56

It sounds like the OPs son is on green band, which is a 1b not a 2c.

However, it's possible that although he's bringing home green band books he can actually read much harder books.

It's also possible he's going to be a level 1 in a few weeks, not a 2c.
