Apart from chanting, which my dd refuses to do, are there any tried and tested methods for learning the times tables.

DD is very visual. Are there any games, either homemade or available to buy that might help ?

Any advice and suggestions very gratefully received.
Thank You !

I had trouble learning the times tables by chanting them at age 8, too. It was a like a tuneless song with the words changing all the time before you'd learned the previous line, and then it was your turn to say one out loud. First time I ever felt like I was bad at math. My father drew one of these for me on graph paper after a small meltdown one night.

It doesn't appeal to everybody, but I carried that around with me and studied it, and eventually the tables sunk in. Studying that graph also made division very easy, because the inverse relationship was right there to see. It is still rote memorizing, but a different approach.

I'm kind of confused from a couple of posts. My dc know most of theirs ie they can write the answers to 40 muddled ones very quickly in 5 mins. Most are immediate but a couple eg 7X8(funny that stuck with me)I can see them really quickly counting though the table then working out the tricky one which they do v quickly.

Is that not knowing their times tables? Are they supposed to just learn them off by heart verbally. How do you test that they "know their times tables"?

Also with say a tricky one should I be stopping them from using a strategy and encouraging them to learn it from say a flash card instead ie off by heart?

Hi Tillyboo, there's a free interactive activity with lots of suggestions about how to use it in Mumsnet Learning. Hopefully this'll help. Would love to know how you get on with it.
