What does "translate" mean in the context of my Y6 dd's maths homework?

There are two shapes on graph paper. One unshaded and one exactly the same but shaded. The question is How many squares have the shaded shapes translated?

Look at the top right hand corner of the unshaded square then count how many squares you need to move along and down till you get to the top right hand corner of the shaded square.

One way to think of it...
You can move a shape in two ways:
1- rotate it
2- translate it (ie move it without rotating it)

It is only confusing because the word translate has another more common meaning.

Bib - that's right. The triangle has translated 5 squares to the right.

And then is it 6 when it goes up?

Think of translate as 'slide' without turning. Yes, it has translated 5 to the right and 6 up.
