Hi,
I know that there are few of you out there who are clued up on this new screening check thats going to take place soon and apologies if this has been covered previously. Just wondered what will happen if a child fails it. My ds has come on in leaps and bounds this year having learnt practically nothing in reception. I am still not convinced that his phonics knowledge is anywhere near good enough to pass this test. He is fine if you show him flash cards however I notice he is very hit and miss when blending sounds when he reads. I have to remind him to break words down and use his phonics knowledge however even when he sounds out correctly he sometimes does not blend the sounds to get the correct word. Its worse with longer words. An example he has today brought home a New Way Green level reading book - The three billy goats gruff it has the words rickety rackety in it. He correctly sounded out the bits r i ck e t and r a ck e t but did not seem to know that the y should make the ee sound and then came up with something completely random in its place. He also doesnt seem to know a-e, i-e, e-e either. I have been doing phonics sessions at home with him and I suspect that a lot of his progress has been down to that really. I have heard people mention dancing bears and bear necessities before and I have looked at these and think they may be useful however I am not sure what level to start with as ds seems fine with cvc cvcc words so dont want something really basic. Any advice would be great.
Sarah
