My dd (7 years old, in Year 3) was in floods of tears this evening because she overheard 3 girls who she thought were her friends saying they didn't like her at lunchtime today. I know they're just girls being girls, learning about friendships, falling out and making up, but it just really sucks. What do you say to your dds in these kind of situations? And do you do anything? We've luckily never been in this situation before.

My dd is normally pretty upbeat, confident and friendly but she's an eldest child and very young for her year which I've always thought has put her at a bit of a disadvantage socially. She's always slightly playing catch up as she's not very socially sophisticated. She's not (yet?) into the not-very-nice game playing that goes on within groups of girls who are trying to establish hierarchies.
