Is there any way to map school black holes?

I have been reading with interest the primary admissions threads because I am one year away from it all, my DS will start school in 2013. There are so many mums saying things like "I am 5 minutes walk to 2 different schools and didn't get any of my preferences". I know it wouldn't be totally accurate due to different entry criteria, e.g. faith schools e, but simplistically if you know the final place offered based on distance at your local schools, is there any computer programme you could use to map out black holes to see where people are missing out on places?

There is a site called freemaptools. You can plot a radius around a point so if you hsd last years furthest distance and the postcode of the schools you can get an idea of likelihood of getting in.
