Same topic again for 3 years in a row?

My eldest child is in Y2 and has announced that this term their topic is "food". It's going to be the cooking, tasting different foods, etc...the announcement was made with a huge roll of the eyes (ie NOT AGAIN!).

The reason for the huge eye roll was because they have done this topic 3 years in a row -in fact my Y1 child is doing the same topic too. Is this normal? I am all for topics learning, but surely doing the same topic 3 years in a row with such a huge variety of ones to choose from is a little uninspiring? Or is this the norm? Just wanted some opinions really, not that I will be able to change it, but curious what other people think?

Depends how it is approached really ... my DS did the same topic of "myself" in YR and Y1, but they focused on entirely different parts of the topic. In YR it was very much about family, physical attributes and the sorts of things you liked doing. In Y1 they looked at differences and similarities with others and broadened the topic to the place where you lived. So same topic but totally different focus.

If they are doing broadly the same things year after year, I thnk I would be fed up too Grin

It does sound a rather excessive when there is such a variety of choices they could make for topics!
