What came before the EYFS? How were children in pre-school and reception assessed?

My middle DC was born in 2004 so started reception aged 4 1/2 in 2008. Will she thus have been assessed under the EYFS for her reception year or did it only apply to 3/4 year-olds in pre-school during 2008?

I think they used to call it desirable outcomes and have a set subjects like the world around them etc,but there was no fixed syllabus, that's why EYFS was brought in.
I never taught formally in reception though.....

Thanks. Really can't remember with the 11 year-old Blushwhat info we were given re: progress at the end of her reception year; With the DC I refer to in my OP we were given a NC level, which makes me wonder what criteria she was assessed under.

Before EYFS we had Birth to 3 and the Curriculum guidance for the Foundation Stage (3-5 years) - they were combined to create EYFS in 2008, In nursery there were Stepping Stones and in reception there was the Foundation Stage profile (almost identical to the EYFS profile).

Nursery classes/schools and reception used the CGFS
Iamnotminterested if your DC was in reception in 2000 they would have a profile score for the 6 areas 1-9 just as now.

Thanks mrz Smile; so children then were given a NC level at the end of reception as the norm?

No reception children weren't given a NC level they were give a profile score

Now I'm confused! Hmm DD2 was definitely given a NC level, no mention of a profile score. (DD1 was born in 2000).

The Foundation Stage was introduced in 2000 and replaced in 2008 by the Early Years Foundation Stage both used the same profile structure for assessment with only a slight change to some wording.
