eating lunch on the floor

DD who is in Y6 and 3 of her friends have to sit on the classroom carpet to eat their packed lunch.Everybody else sits at a table but there is insufficient chairs and teh dinner lady won't let tghem carry one each through from the next classroom.
Her, and her friends gripe is that the echildren don't have different indoor and outdoor shoes and she doesn't particularly want to sit and eat on a carpet that's been trampled over by 20 pairs of shoes each day which may have walked through dog muck etc.I don't know whether she is BU or not but it doesn't sound very hygienic to me and it doesn't sound very civilised either. We always sit at the table to eat at home and I know one of the girls always brings hot food in a flask and I think that must be harder to manage.I have wondered whether I should suggest a picnic rug that can be laundered at home.

I wouldn't be happy with that. I would be stamping my foot up at the school TBH. 11 year olds can't sit on the floor to eat lunch, that's not right.

That's just stupid. Children should eat at the table.

FamiliesShareGerms · 23/03/2012 11:06

Yup, they need to make arrangements to accommodate everyone at a table. Definitely one to make a fuss about, esp if your DD is unhappy with it.

Why won't the dinner lady let them carry chairs in? Confused

I think that's outrageous! It's not just about getting food/energy/nutrition into the kids, it's about learning how to eat together in a civilised manner. I see eating your lunch at a table, with utensils and good manners, as part of their education. You should speak to the head.
