How to help Yr1 DS with his writing?

DS had a glowing report at parents evening but his teacher is concerned about his writing - it is generally quite untidy, some letters still backwards, all different sizes. When he's writing a story etc he forgets finger spaces and rushes. His teacher said he's monitoring it and reminding DS but how can I help him at home, without nagging and making him miserable?

I'm a teacher and should know this

what about going back a step to pre-handwriting skills using the picture worksheets available? of practice his writing by writing his spellings out over and over again, that way he's doing two jobs in one?

Hes only year 1, buy him a book and help him write a sentence each day about what hes done with a picture to illustrate,he will write it neatly as he will want you and others to look at it.

Thank you. We do some writing at home - a bit like you said nickschick. Will carry on. And pre-writing skills is a good idea, I should've thought of that. Thanks!

You can look at something like 'write from the start' if you want something more formalised, but the diary thing is pretty common. Grin I kept dd1's, she's 12 now. And it's very cute...

I struggle to get DS1 to practise his writing and he won't do anything if he suspects there might be some educational motivation Grin.

So I make him write things he wants. He has to write me a list if he wants things from the supermarket.

He has to write a letter to someone if he wants them to come for tea.

List of people he wants to come to his birthday party.

I know he can write proper sentences etc at school so it's more to get him used to writing as a life skill iyswim.
