Reading ages

My dd is currently making her way through the Kipper books which are part of the Oxford reading tree collection. She is 5 1/2 and is on stage 5, the yellow books. I can't find any info on whether that is the average stage for her age or not. The school seem a bit cagey to put an age to a stage but if anyone knows what the average ages are for the different stages then please let me know!

They are probably cagey as it varies so hugely from child to child and also parents can be very competitive etc. I don't know why they worry so much as I thought it was a good thing that DS1's school did the coloured book bands instead so no one knew but the children know exactly what level is what and who's on the highest etc!

Stage 5 is spot on for her age (stages 4-6 are generally for Y1), have a look at this link www.readingchest.co.uk/book-bands.

As I said it varies so much, some children may only be on red books (1/2) and some on white (stage10), I wouldn't really worry too much either way.

Sorry I think I misunderstood? Yellow book band is different than stage 5 ORT books.

Thanks, I'll have a look on that website now. I'm just curious really to know how well she's doing!

The website explains the levels and the comparison between the colour book bands and the ORT levels.

Think I've got it now. Although it is defo a yellow book but defo says stage 5 on it. Strange Confused
