Y1 with poor handwriting and pencil grip

When DS was in reception he struggled with fine motor skills but we did a lot of work with him and he has improved. However his writing is still poor and very large. He doesn't form letters properly. I spoke with one of his teachers today about homework to clarify they were concentrating on writing rather than spellings.

He has two teachers as one job shares with deputy head, plus three TAs at various times. There have been a few issues about consistency with the teachers.

I have just clicked today that DS seems to be hypermobile. Having looked at past threads I am now kicking myself for not identifying this earlier Sad

Do I raise this with school to get him tested or take him to Gp? Feel like I have let him down

Yes, how dare you work (presumably to pay bills, mortgage etc). Just what you need isn't it - other people's judgey pants.
Don't feel bad - you've got your suspicions about your sons writing, it's still early days if he's only Y1.

No, don't feel bad. Not all kids have neat writing and, you know, it really doesn't matter. Talk talk talk about everything and anything, get the brain and the imagination active. You mat find all his life his handwriting is terrible - both my teenage son and my husband have appalling writing, but fabulous imaginations and are creative, successful and happy people. There are so many other ways to communicate, don't let him feel he isn't absolutely fabulous because his handwriting is messy!

Thanks for the kind words. Has a shitty day as couldn't sleep worrying I have failed him. I have suffered with depression and although have been good for a whole this has just hit a raw nerve.

Does the after school leader have a family ?

I think it's worth investigating I have a lovely little boy in my class with great ideas and imagination that no one could read because he struggled to make marks on paper due to hypermobility and after only 4 OT sessions his writing is so much better and everyone can see how fabulous his ideas are.

The after school leader has four children, all of whom are grown up. She is lovely and normally is supportive and maybe I took her comments to heart too much tonight.

I doubt my own abilities and blame myself for him being clingy and various other issues. I will book appointment with Gp for DS and take it from there

Thanks again for bothering to respond
