Fun games for learning phonics

I have been trying to help my dd learn her phase 3 phonic sounds (digraphs). She is doing well but i feel the way i do it now (making her do spellings with the sound in it), isn't much fun. Are there any games you can think of to make it more enjoyable, or should i plod on with the spellings?

Songs

That's great. Would you get them to watch that and learn the songs?

Sorry sound a bit clueless but this is new to me, i didn't do phonics at school. There seems so many it is a bit daunting.

Me neither! I think the children also learn actions which go with sounds and songs too no doubt. But I'm sure any activities are a by-product. After all nobody would want their child to know all the songs and actions but not be able to read. So my guess would be that actions and songs are a fun way of sneaking the sounds into children's routines so that learning their sounds isn't boring and as repetitive as it otherwise might be. So after singing the "ch" song fifty times the child will know that "c" and "h" make "ch" assuming that it knows what c & h are. I guess at that stage you can forget about the song.

If you PM me with your email, I'll send you an e-booklet I've written on just this topic. There are loads of ways to make it fun!

We use this site in school sometimes for a bit of light relief in our phonics sessions Grin. Mainly the pirate treasure and picnic on pluto ones. The games correspond to the phases.

I've just found this:

www.arcademics.com/games/coconuts/coconuts.html

It's quite advanced, but a nice game!
