My dd has to write a summary of the elves and the shoemaker story she heard today. All good except she says there was a king in it and shes getting really upset as she cant remember what happens between the king buying fine boots and the bit where the couple hide in the cupboard.

Anyone know? Ive googled it and I cant find anything with a king in it.

Disney's cartoon version from 1956 has a King of the Industrial Elves in it.

We have two versions and neither of them have a king in. I would guess that in the story she's read the king is one of the people who come into the shop and buy the shoes that the elves have made. Or maybe just someone with fancy olden days clothes who looked like a king to her?

My precis: Shoemaker and wife very poor, but have enough leather to make one pair of shoes. Cut out leather and leave on bench. In morning leather has been made into beautiful shoes which they sell for lots of money. Buy more leather, cut out, leave on bench overnight, repeat. Lots of fancy people come and buy wonderful shoes. Shoemaker and wife wonder who could be making shoes for them so hide in cupboard to find out. See elves. Depending on version, make tiny clothes and shoes for elves as thank you.

I didn't know Disney had made a cartoon of it! Ds would love that.

thanks liegeandlief - it was a story read out to the class, so it def wasnt based on the pic.

Ive told her to just leave a space and then write the rest of the story and tell the teacher she cant recall it, but shes fretting that she will get a detention to do it! I cant see the king being that significant if she cant recall it (unless she was chatting to someone during storytime)

The version I know first has a lady who buys a pair of shoes, then a rich nobleman who buys the two pairs of shoes. I wonder if she thinks the rich nobleman was a King, or he was in her story?

My favourite nursery tale.
