Reading at home - Reception class

DD (5.3) is in foundation. She is enjoying school and obviously likes the phonics lessons they do (Read/Write Inc +Jolly phonics). At home though she doesn't want to do her reading books or word cards. She knows initial letter sounds but doesn't want to sound words out. She tends to rush through the reading books by guessing from the pictures rather than looking at the words. Should I persist with this or take a relaxed approach and wait for her to show more interest?

We're still reading together (me to her) and I try to point out some of the letter sounds but it's not the reading books!

My DD is also reception and I tend to go by her lead, luckily for me DD is normally really keen - however on times when she isn't

I would still read to her - generally books where there is the odd simple / larger word etc and encourage her to read that one
try to encourage her to read her book with her and I taking turns with each page / line / word - whatever!

if she is shattered- we skip a night tbh, though most nights she does read (5/6 out of the 7). I haven't had too much trouble getting mine to show interest though so this approach may not work for you? Hopefully someone who has been in the same boat will be along soon

Thanks - I think we need to be a bit more organised too and pick a better time. With 3 DCs, the reading book is often the last thing I remember in the evening and then she's tired.

Can she sound out any words, even simple cvc words?

She sound like my son, who's now 8. He has a very good memory and was very good at getting words from context clues, or guessing based on the initial letter. This is all great and he learnt to read well but not sounding anything out eventually gave him issues, particularly with new words.

I have that trouble too - a younger DS makes it hard work, If she isn't tired I will wait until he's in bed and then read, but if I sense she is going to be too tired then I tend to read with her when his fav program is on or get him doing something he loves, other than that he quite likes to climb up next to us and try and sit on her and take the book and listen
