Phonics - right stage for halfway through Y1?

Not sure if my dd's school is 'behind' in teaching the phonics phases - the newsletter this week says that in phonics they are using the sounds ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, ar, or, ir, ou, oy, air to make words.

They don't seem to place much importance on phonics, e.g. sending home look and say books.

Are these sounds about right for February Y1?

stopthinkingsomuch if a child hasn't been taught phase 3 they haven't been taught basic phonics only a few sounds (s, a,t,i,p,n,c,e,h,m,d,g.o,u,r,b,f,l )

gaelicsheep no stage 3 Songbirds isn't equivalent to phase 3

Some of the Stage 1 books contain phase 3 sounds (starting at Zak and the Vet)

Just looked up what my definition of basics would have been. DC knew phase 3 and had a bunch of tricky / high frequency words at the start of year 2. Mainly what we had done at home because school hadn't. Having more phonics lessons in school would have helped her but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

A little work each day certainly helped her but I'm now finding that I'm doing things with my little boy because I think there are gaps in his phonic knowledge and he's almost been rushed too far the other way. It was just more intense with DD at home in the months leading up to the move. There were opportunities in year 2 for her to recap anything she didn't already know.

Mrz sorry to crash OPs thread but have parents evening re phonics check this week. Where is best online for parents to get a good knowledge of how phonics should be taught. I have feeling that DS is being taught mixed methods but would like to learn more

OK thanks mrz. Where does Stage 3 Songbirds come then in relation to his age (5.75)? He's managing those quite well with a little help, although he definitely hasn't covered all of the double consonants etc. that are now cropping up in them. I think he needs more reading materials at Stage 2 level to practise with as well so I'll find some of those. I'm not getting much guidance from the school as you might have imagined. If he is comfortably into Stage 3 Songbirds by the time he gets to his new school will he be at an OK level?

Sorry again for hijack - should have started new thread, but that would make me seem even more neurotic.

Not much guidance from his current school I should say. When I know where his new school will be I will ask them, but it's up in the air just now.

Thanks mrz the links were very useful.

It appears school are using mixed methods rather than pure phonics.
Any suggestions what I should do?
