Reception reading levels

Just wondering if anybody knew what the average reading level is at the end of reception year? DD1 is loving learning, but we are moving in the summer and she will be starting year 1 in a new school on a different reading system which I am sure will set her back a bit for a while.

I don't think its as simple as saying there is an average. If you believe Mn then kids leave reception anywhere from being on stage 1 to being a free reader!

I agree with coconuts - i listen to DD1's class read and of the 12 Y1's (mixed class by age, not ability), there is one completely free reader and one child on CVC cards with the rest in between.

DS was on stage 7 at the end of yr r, though had the ability to be a free reader, but the school put them slowly through the levels and he was as high as a kid was allowed to go by end reception. DD was on stage 1 at end of reception, though she could read absolutely nothing but the word "the" and was simply not getting phonics at all. Kids vary, in a few years time it probably won't matter.

absolutely1

Even if your DD does take a dip in her reading, she'll have caught back up by the end of year 2 and the SATS. More likely, way before then.

Don't think there is an average as pp say. If she's loving it I don't think she'll have too many problems Smile.

There might not be an average. But for ORT the expectation in line with NC is level 3 at the end of reception. Look up your reading scheme online & you should be able to find some more info. Something like this.
