Eltham college

HI everyone,
My son has recently got admission at Elham COllege at 7+
Does anyone have any feedback about the school, academic or otherwise. He is a bright , talented boy coming from a mixed school.

Ooo, watching with interest, we went round last year and really liked it so thinking of trying next year for ds. Was your son tutored? Is he at a state or private school?

He wasn't tutored. I just taught him at home.
He is at a private school currently. It does look like a lovely school. Bu I am dreading the Blackwall tunnel commute twice a day.

I'm not, but it has a very good reputation as the best boys' independent school in Bromley borough and I know parents with ds's there who are very happy. Hope this helps.

Thats crazy - you can NOT commute through the black wall tunnel daily for school!

It's hell on Earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (The tunnel - I don't know the school!)

Have you TRIED driving it at 7.30 am when one bore is closed?
Or the diversion via Rotherhithe?
or up to Tower Bridge?
or down to the Dartford crossing?

Seriously.
Eltham was an excellent school in my day.
Presume it still is
but you are looking at up to 4 hours a day getting there and back
is that REALLY what you want for the next 7 years?

I would say the tunnel isn't too bad coming from north to south direction - you are against the traffic (and obviously you may live v close to the tunnel). It is possible but the traffic/drive will become a bind over 7 years.
It is a good school and has great facilities for sports etc.
If you are in east london, have you considered the Forest school or others further up into nw london?

I drove south to north through the black wall tunnel recently at 9.15 am recently and it took 45 minutes from the sun and sands roundabout ( approx a mile from the mouth of the tunnel)

as per Google Maps
Eltham College to Bromley by Bow Tube (as an easily identifiable Norf ah dah rivuh location) = 7.1 miles and SHOULD be 12 minutes
I know the Sun and Sands roundabout EXTREMELY well

They send out letters on 12 th February, but whether or not they have already told parents about scholarships not sure. Heard of a few schools who phoned some parents days after exam as results so good. What other schools applied for? Anyone St Dunstan's?

This thread bought back memories: I was a pupil at Eltham (a long, long time ago!) and my friend lived in Limehouse and used to get the bus - I think it took him three buses including one throught the B/wall Tunnel. I don't remember complaining too much but I think it was sometimes grim.

I guess you need to try the journey one schoolday morning to get a feel for how bad it will be.

HELP PLEASE!!!just got offer letter to Eltham.....Would have loved to accept but not really happy with the amount of music award.....we just cant afford it!!!:((!!!any advice on haggling???.....how appropriate is it???. Any Advice welcome please.

Hello I am a mum of a boy who will be leaving the 6th form this year. He got excellent grades at GCSE and is predicted 3 A* at A level. I think the school is very good for bright boys (and girls in the 6th form) but not so good for the less abled (I am not being rude). There music department is excellent, he did not get a scholarship for the senior school only a music award but did get a music scholarship for the 6th form. I do know people who haggled and did not get anything at all but also some that did and did get something, we have a new head who is wonderful and I think he will do brilliant things for the school (was not keen on the old head) It is a shame my son is leaving this year as I would have liked him to have a number of years with the new head. I am also looking for a good school for my DS as we are moving to London this summer. I checked all the previous league tables, etc. about Eltham. It IS always excellent (the best, I should say) in south of London, until last year (2014) when GCSE statistics suddenly fell sharply, even the number of students at KS4. What has happened? Anyone can help with some information? greatly appreciated! How is life in Mottingham area? - transport to central London, shopping, community, safety?

Mottingham itself is not an affluent area and whilst the school sits on the edge of it, I doubt many pupils live there.

Nearby areas would be Chislehurst, Bickley, Bromley, Eltham, Grove Park, Blackheath.

But who cares where you live if you want to pay school fees then so what.

If you want a villagey feel, shops and restaurants then look at Blackheath or Chislehurst to live. I would look at bus routes to school unless money is no problem for taxis or you are doing the school run yourself.
Traffic is not great in the area at rush hour so being on the Grove park side of the school is better than coming anywhere along the A20.

My children do not attend the school but we use the school for extra curricular stuff.

Hi,

I am looking to apply for Eltham college junior school for my 6-year-old. Can anyone provide information about the 7+ entry exam into Eltham college (Junior school)? Insight and examples of exam questions would be much appreciated...and can anyone also recommend a private tutor with experience with these exams??
