my year 5 child has been asked to read this. I remember it being great when I read it at secondary school, but remember quite a bit of romping in the hay, so to speak. what do you think?

Most of it's utterly delightful.

I would think most of it would bore them senseless. Bizarre choice imo.

sugartongue · 29/01/2012 21:50

Hmmm, not the best choice. I'd a great little book, but there are more suitable choices for a 9 year old. I got stuck into the classics at that stage, but the 19th century ones so there was no sex in them!

Greythorne · 29/01/2012 21:57

No
Quite a lot of sex
Not very interesting.

Has she read Anne of Green Gables
Little Women
Phoenix and the Carpet
Tom's Midnight Garden
The Growing Summer
The Wheel on the School

Will think of more.

Does it not have a planned rape (failed) in it?

Longtallsally · 30/01/2012 09:35

Yes, there is a planned rape (failed) in it. I would use that to Hmm this choice with the teacher. Agree with everything Greythorne suggests as alternatives.

No idea, BF did it for English lit. Took me to see a theatre version. It was interminably dull and I dozed off.

DeWe · 30/01/2012 09:51

At the end there is a planned rape, however it isn't explicit, so might go over the head of a 9 year old. I still wouldn't be keen on my 11 year old reading it, and I'm fairly relaxed about what they read.

I thought it was a very boring book and he came across as rather a nasty person.

gramercy · 30/01/2012 10:05

I vaguely remember from reading it at (secondary) school that the boys plot salaciously to attack this girl as she walks home through the woods. Even though it didn't come off it was nasty and I wouldn't want my daughter if she were in year 5 reading that.
