any books to do very basic phonics with DD??

Hi

DD is 4 a in couple of wks and very into learning to read etc. She can sound out quite a few words and is getting the hand of blending etc on a basic level ie S I T etc.

I have a few ORT books left over from her brother (now yr2) but tbh they don't seem to capture her attention very much.

One book we have is a Oxford phonics book called sun hat fun which she loves (although have only done the first story in it so far)

Has anyone got any good ideas of books similar that are cheap to buy or that I can ask for in the local library???

Ds started reading by reading the Mr Men books.

Our library has quite a good selection of early readers.

You can get read write inc card with the 'graphemes' or whatever they are called (ay, may I play l: igh, fly high) that stuff for about a fiver off Amazon.

Were you looking for specific stories?

flash cards would be good too

But yes I think she would prefer books iyswim.

LOL at Mr Men books, my ds (6) loves them still.

Cheap to buy, designed to teach beginners how to read, amd very much enjoyed by small children are the BRI books from www.piperbooks.co.uk.
No work books or anything, just little stories.

Get the Songbirds phonics books from The Book People. Great price too.

I second the Songbird phonics, DS also 4 years enjoys them. Usborne First Readers are good too, they have a bit for parent to read and a bit for child to read, and DS likes having a bit for both of us.

The book people have the whole 'read with biff and chip' series at the moment. A good workbook to buy is 'Schofield and Sims Sound phonics phase 2 book 1'. Cheap on Amazon. They are great for teaching phonics. Most reading books do not just have phonics words - apart from the Sound phonics books or Ruth Miskin's read write inc.

I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea but I managed to pick up the Peter & Jane books at a charity shop and my just turned 3 year old has managed to finished 1a, 1b and is on 2a, I am actually amazed how quickly she has managed to learn to read using these books. The reading books are part of the The Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme.

A really good book on helping a child with phonics at home is Montessori Read and Write by Lynne Lawrence. Montessori advocated phonics over a100 years ago - this book is great for helping parents now. I have recommended it a lot of friends
