Year 3 wobbles

I have never known ds1 ever not want to go to school. Since September he has changed his opinion of school quite a lot and has recently started clinging on to me at the school gate and crying at line-up time. This has even come forward to getting up in the morning.

I've tried lots of different conversations to check he's not being bullied, or unhappy with teacher etc and I don't believe that's what's causing this wobble. He simply says he misses us too much when he's at school, and has started begging me to keep him at home so we can spend the day together.

I have heard y3 is a big change, just wondered if anyone else is dealing with this or if there is anything else that happens at 7/8 that might cause this change?

I have been dealing with the same thing with DD. Never had an issue before this year but every day it is an excuse as to why she doesn't want to go. Have spoken to her teacher (who I think is half the problem although DD says not) and also spoken to the Head as it is really affecting her in school and out.

No solutions overly working yet I'm afraid to say.

I know that isn't any help to you but wanted to sympathise.

Found this with both of mine so far. I certainly found at their school that there was a big change in year 3 and that the expectations were in place from day one with little preparation! I know some schools do it better than ours but I think it is often overlooked as a critical point. I know some stuff I've read suggests that it is one of the most difficult transitions. They have both come out the other side, so just have to do it once more now!

Year three is a big change, both in work level and the degree of independence expected, so he may well be looking to claw back some little-person-ness at home, if you see what I mean. Help him to be on top of his bags, kit etc and hunker down - I imagine it will settle. Horrid for you though.

thanks all for sympathies, kinda helps! I think it probably is a question of riding the storm.

Have also got really good tips from the y3 writing posts to make sure he's not feeling too much pressure with work at least while he's at home.
