Hi Does anyone know how to get hold of the little wooden blocks (cubes and long sticks of ten cubes) used in schools for teaching maths? I've looked on amazon, but don't know what to call them!

There is also these called Base 10 blocks which are often used in school

Iamnotminterested · 16/01/2012 16:15

Aren't they called deines?

Diddee · 16/01/2012 17:10

Cuisenaire Rods are different to base 10. The Cuisenaire Rods are different coloured rods of different lengths whereas the base ten blocks or sometimes called dienes apparatus are the more old fashioned tens and units that are used for understanding the value of the digits in a number (called place value in school).

The tens and units rods (used to be wooden but now come in plastic) are quite expensive - you can buy a good size set on amazon for around £16 ish. Search for "base ten number concept set". We have got these and they come with a little leaflet with ideas etc on.
Don't buy cuisenaire rods if you want the rods of 10 and single units, as they are not the same thing.

Aaah MiaWallace and Diddee - I did notice this and wondered if it brought in lots of bases which could be confusing. Thanks! I do wonder how the other blocks are used...
