We are moving to the UK in July. I have a 5 year old DD and I note that many of you speak of these books. Do they use them in state schools? Can someone tell me what level a child should be on by the end of reception so she is prepared when she gets there for Y1 in the fall? Do you recommend any other reading books to prep her for the UK curriculum? Also, can you buy these books in a store? My husband is in London monthly.

Thanks for the help.

many state schools use the ORTbooks as part ( or unfortunately sometimes all) of their reading scheme. The level a child should be at by the end of Reception varies considerably! Anywhere from pink to orange band is common and a good percentage of children are even higher.
If you are thinking of purchasing books, either ORT or others, aim to ensure they are phonic ones rather than look and say ( the early ORT books-which are unfortunately still around some schools-are Look and Say and not recommended!) . Some other ranges to look out for are Songbirds, Big Cat Phonics, Floppy Phonics, Phonics Bugs etc! I like to use a range as children can get "fixated" on one particular style. All these books can be bought in good book shops or online-The Book People usually have sets and Amazon always have some. You can also access some online at www.oxfordowl.co.uk
In addition to reading scheme books, just have lots and lots of other books to share!

I would take a look at MNs Learning area and give ORT a wide berth for now

I've noticed that ORT seem to be offloading "look and guess" books in packages via remainders shops and book clubs.
