how do I approach the teacher to show I'm concerned? He is still achieving the recommended levels for his age but the level he is achieving has not dropped. Am I to assume from this that the other children are moving forward in great leaps and DS is being left standing still?

I think a note, or email, to the teacher asking for a meeting would be entirely appropriate. At the very least you'd want to clarify why this has happened and where he needs to target his effort.

Thanks Barbarian- Had a chat with teacher after school. He states he has a group of very bright children in his class this year and this has meant DS being placed in a lower group and stated that DS had not gone down a level. He also stated DS scored low in the 'Writing' part of his assessment and this where he needs help.

Would anybody know what elements are covered in the 'writing' category? I know handwriting, spelling and punctuation are part of it - anything else?

Sentence structure, grammar, organisation, vocabulary chosen to produce different effects.

Writing assessments would be looked at under the following headings
vary sentences for clarity, purpose and effect
write with technical accuracy of syntax and punctuation in phrases, clauses and sentences
organise and present whole texts effectively, sequencing and structuring information, ideas and events
construct paragraphs and use cohesion within and between paragraphs
write imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts
produce texts which are appropriate to task, reader and purpose
select appropriate and effective vocabulary
use correct spelling
handwriting and presentation
