ORT Magic Tree books - the Sergeant Pepper period?

Just rediscovering the joy of these with DD. I'd completely forgotten how bonkers and trippy the books suddenly went, after being really quite mundane for several levels (pissed horse aside). Had the writer gone off to India to 'find himself', met a dubious guru, swallowed quantities of LSD sufficient to floor an elephant and then come up with tales of shrinking children and partying pirates?

I always found the one with all the different bears ( I think they had a car race) rather surreal! One of the joys in now teaching Year 6 is the variety of good literature we can get through but I DO miss Kipper at times!

The number of times I've been tempted to post in Baby Names asking for opinions on Biff, Chip or Kipper. Actually the trippiness started way back with those names didn't it?

Which is the pissed horse?? I love Pip the Monkey, where the zookeeper is allowed to take the poorly monkey home - ahhhhh Smile

The one where the rag and bone man's horse eats the fermented apples and gets drunk-a well known classic!

Correction to title: I meant Magic Key, obviously. Although he probably threw a magic tree or two in there as well.

There's one where a whole load of Dutch cheeses make a bid for freedom, that's quite weird as well.

I like the ones where Nadim accidentally kicks his shoe off into a pond on a school trip, and for the next few books he has a plastic bag tied over his foot.

We loved the Time Chronicles ones.

Personally, I was shocked by the drunken horse! It is totally inappropriate....

I don't get why Floppy and Co get called boring so often on here - they're not boring at all, they're bonkers as hell!

I like gran - she's so anti-authority. She is my idol for my retirement! I love the one where she ends up having tea with Queen Victoria.
