Hi, im new to mumsnet...
We are moving to Casterton/Barbon area in couple of months and I was hoping that somebody could help with some of my questions.
I have a 9 year old who is going in P5 now, what year will he be put in when we move to england? His birthday is in november... and is there any complications changing schools in mid year?
I aslo wanted to ask does anyone know good primary schools around that area.
Thank you

Sorry I don't know the area but your son will go into year 4 in the English school system. Ime schools are pretty good at helping children settle and catch up/adjust.

Have you looked at the local authority website for the area? They usually school listings, ofsted reports etc.

whyme2 is correct that your son will go into Y4.

You will need to apply to Cumbria County Council for a school place. You will not be able to apply formally until you can provide evidence of your new address - a solicitor's letter confirming exchange of contracts or a signed letting agreement. You can express a preference but if your preferred schools are all full you son will be allocated a place at the nearest school with vacancies. That may be some distance from your home. If it is over 3 miles by the shortest walking route the Council will have to provide free transport to and from school for your son.

I would ask Cumbria which schools nearby have places available in Y4 and arrange to visit them when you are in the area midweek. There is, of course, no guarantee that those schools will still have places when you move but you need to start somewhere.

If you do not get a place at your preferred school you can appeal. If it comes to that there are a number of experts on here (myself, admission, PanelMember and others) who will give you advice. However, I hope it doesn't come to that.
