Please can someone explain this to me,and what is the best way to help my ds learn this.
Sorry if I sound real stupid,i think it would help if it was worded in a different way.

It just means you start with a number up to 10 - say 7.

One more is 8 (if we have 7 sweets and someone gives us 1 more how many do we have?)
One less is 6 (if we eat 1 of those 7 sweets, how many are left?)

Obviously you can do this with any number.

Hi Griffalo2:

One more/ one less with numbers up to 10 works very well with food.

Tell them to eat up their baked beans, candies, raisins, etc.... until they have just 10. Then start playing.

You have 10 raisins. If Mum eats one - (and eat it) - how many do you have now? (If they don't know the answer - count them up).

You have 9 raisins. If you eat one (let him eat one) - how many do you have now? (If they don't know the answer count them up).

Alternatively you can do this by counting out things - so one raisin, if Mummy gives you one more, how many raisins is that. Etc...

Snakes and Ladders is excellent for counting - play forwards
Play Snakes and Ladders backwards for counting back.

Enjoy!
