Not necessarily. There is absolutely no point moving on if he's not mastered the basics.

mrz · 23/12/2011 15:15

he knows the letter /sound relationships so has mastered the basics and can continue learning new sounds while working on blending and segmenting ... very bad practice sorry

In my school, children repeat phase 2 if they are not confident recognising and using phase 2 sounds.
There's no point learning the likes of "air" and "ear" if they don't know SATPIN reliably. He'd only get put off the learning if he has no clue what's going on. That's good practise, putting the happiness and desire to learn in the child first.

but he is recognising and using phase 2 sounds just not confidently blending and segmenting ...yet
Why prevent a children from learning all the sounds just because they are taking a little longer to get blending?
It's like saying sorry you can't run because you haven't mastered jogging Xmas Hmm

mrz · 23/12/2011 15:34

and he knows all the sounds because he has been saying them for years...

It's good practice.

I agree with mrz - it's ridiculous being so hung up about the phases, and can hold children back completely unnecessarily.

I find the argument that making a child relearn something they have already mastered is putting the happiness and needs of the child first it's sending the message that what they have learnt isn't good enough ...
